What it says on the tin
Banksy really doesn’t like advertising. However, it’s interesting that he, by mastering the techniques which he criticises brands for, has becomes a very successful brand himself. Without advertising, there would be no Banksy; however the lack of capitalist motives means there’s no need to cry hypocrisy. I’m not sure what the copyright laws are in his case, and to what degree he is involved with the commercialisation of his artworks, but it seems some companies treat him the same way he insists we treat them. I bet he hates that as well. I’m not out to take sides though. I think Banksy’s great, both artistically and intellectually, while I’ll defend to my death brands’ right to be clichéd, bland and in-your-face.
